Plug-in Solar power.
by Hakan Falk, "Energy Saving Now", Nov. 2003
Solar systems in combination with simple connection methods to "The Grid", both from administrative and technical perspective. The equipment should be as easy to install as armatures for light and need no special electrician or experts. It is suitable for mass production and the possibility to manufacture and sell at low prices.
The specification sounds futuristic, but it is already available on the market in The Netherlands. The key to this development is the changes in the Dutch regulations, that permits simple net metering connections by "do it yourself" (DIY) methods and that will open up for a rapid and significant addition of renewable energy to the Dutch economy. All parts are in production and with a higher sales/production, the pricing will be in the range that will return the investment in a couple of years. Unpack, mount your solar panels, plug it in your wall socket and you are ready. The grid connect inverters that make this possible is developed and manufactured by the Dutch companies like MasterVolt and Philips Solar Systems.
The simplest inverter from MasterVolt is named Soladin 120 and have the necessary approvals for the European markets, like SE ISO 9001 and others. It will deliver 70 to 145 Watt to the socket and "The Grid". Many Solar panels and inverters can be plugged in at the same time and work like a modular system. MasterVolt also offers larger inverters with simple installation methods.
The solar systems from Philips Solar have the a similar profile as the larger inverters from MasterVolt and Philips also offer a complete range of products for the DIY.
By the decision of the Dutch authorities the ensure the availability of an "Active Distribution Grid", they now positioned themselves for a rapid growth with innovative solar systems and renewable energy. Together with the Dutch subsidiaries, encouragement and lower prices on PV panels, we could see a growth in solar systems in The Netherlands that resembles the Internet growth.
